SCC to hold first SCC Boys Tennis Postseason Tournament

(4-11-06) - The Southern Connecticut Conference will hold its first postseason tournament for boys and girls tennis this coming May, the league’s Athletic Directors announced today. There will be a four-team, single-elimination tournament between the four regular-season division champions (Hammonasset, Housatonic, Oronoque and Quinnipiac).

“This is another positive step for the conference because our tennis student-athletes and teams can now compete for a SCC championship,” said SCC Commissioner Al Carbone. “I give credit to the tennis coaches for recognizing this positive opportunity and seeing it through.”

With the addition of the boys and girls tennis playoffs, the SCC now hosts postseason tournaments for 23 of its 26 interscholastic sponsored sports.

Amity Duo Claim State Open Doubles Titles
6/16/05 -- Amity's Todd Krame and Paul Vithayathil captured the CIAC State Open Doubles Championship with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over SCC-rival Fairfield Prep's duo of Connor Heine and Mike Schinella. The match was played at Conard High School in West Hartford.  With the first set tied at 2, Kramer/Vithayathil won 10 of the next 11 games to record the straight set victory and capture the title. The Spartan duo had reached the semifinals of the Class LL tournament a week earlier.

Amity’s Ben Zuckerberg Wins Class LL Singles Title
Amity's Ben Zuckerberg defeated top-seeded Sho Matsumoto (Greenwich) in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) to capture the Class LL state title at Conard High School in West Hartford. Zuckerberg, the second seed, avenged a 2004 quarterfinal loss to Matsumoto. Zuckerberg reached the finals after defeating Andrew Yazmer (Simsbury) in three sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-3) in the semifinals.   Fairfield Prep's doubles tandem of Connor Heine and Micheal Schinella fell in the Class LL championship match to Greenwich's Julien Versailles and Scott Niehaus, 7-6 (3) and 6-3.  In the final Class LL team standings, Amity placed second (19 points) behind eventual champion Greenwich (26). Fairfield Prep tied for third with 16 points and Cheshire was sixth (13).   In the Class L competition, Guilford finished fourth with 12 points, while Hand placed fifth in Class M.
