The Southern Connecticut Conference was well-represented on the various 2005 spring sports All-Area Teams, as selected by the sports department staff of the New Haven Register. A total of 101 student-athletes earned All-Area status.
In addition, seven student-athletes earned MVP honors in their respective sport, while nine individuals earned Coach of the Year accolades.
During the spring season, SCC teams won a total of five state championships. Seven additional teams earned runner-up status in CIAC state competition during the spring campaign.
Since the league's inception in 1994, SCC schools have now won 219 state championships.
GIRLS LACROSSE
MVP: Dana Heritage, Junior, Midfield, Cheshire
Heritage scored 81 goals and had 28 assists for the Rams, who reached the Division I semifinals. Holds school record for career goals (186), points (233) and season record for ground balls (92).

Smith was an intimidating force for the undefeated Gaels (25-0) who captured the SCC and Class L titles in 2005. Smith had a team-best 203 kills, hitting at a remarkable .523 percent. He also had 92 digs, 36 blocks and 63 aces. Smith will attend Sacred Heart University in the fall.

MVP: A.J. Alessi, Senior, Attack, Branford
Alessi had 61 goals and 41 assists to lead his team to a 17-2 record, 16-0 in the regular season. Alessi ended up with 149 career goals and 70 career assists. He has been selected to play in the National Senior All-Star game in St. Louis this summer. Also, an All-Area selection in soccer, Alessi will attend Quinnipiac.

MVP: Natasha Harvey, Senior, Career
Harvey proved she may be the state’s best female track athlete by winning the long jump (19-5.75), the 100 hurdles (14.49) and he 300 hurdles (44.43) at the State Open. Harvey then won the 100 hurdles (14.56) and placed second in the 300 hurdles (44.24) at the New England Championships.

Bushnell capped off a fine career with the individual medalist honor at the CIAC Division III tournament at Timberlin Golf Course in Berlin. Bushnell finished tied for second (77) the SCC tournament at New Haven Country Club. He will attend Rollins College this fall.
