13 SCC Football Players Earn All-State Honors from the New Haven Register

13 SCC football players earned 2004 All-State honors from the New Haven Register. It is the 73rd consecutive All-State Football team, one of the nation’s longest running high school honors. The team is selected by the Register sports department’s editorial staff.

Hand, the Class M champion and the top-ranked team in the state, led the way with five players selected either to the First, Second, or Third Team. Branford, which earned its first state title berth in 23 years, had two first-team selections.

36 additional players earned Honorable Mention status.

First Team
Ryan Fodor, QB, Hand – Passed for over 1,800 yards and 20 touchdowns for the top-ranked Tigers. Fodor completed 23-of-29 passes for 367 yards in Hand’s two playoff wins. He is headed to Yale.

Craig Kenney, Utility, Branford – The Register’s 2004 All-Area Player of the Year, Kenney passed for 1,556 yards and 18 touchdowns while running for 1,355 yards and another 20 touchdowns. On defense, Kenney ecorded 75 tackles and a team-best seven sacks.

Marc Toni, LB, Hand – Averaged 12 tackles a game for the state’s top-ranked team which had five shutouts on the season. Also a tight end, Toni is headed to the University of Rhode Island.

Kyle Morrison, DB, Branford – Had 65 tackles and nine interceptions for Class MM runner-up Hornets. Morrison led a Hornet defense that posted four shutouts and allowed just 65 points. Also ran for more than 500 yards and 10 touchdowns as a running back.

Second Team
Jim Eckenrode, WR, Hand – Caught 49 passes for 891 yards and 13 touchdowns for the SCC Division I East and Class M champions.

Steve McKenna, OL, West Haven – Powerful two-way lineman who help the Blue Devils to another winning campaign.

Aaron Ellison, DB, Wilbur Cross – Steady defensive performer with a penchant for game-saving interceptions.

Amari Spievey, ST, Xavier – Talented all-around threat returned both kickoffs and punt for touchdowns this season.

Third Team
Collin Sheppard, RB, Amity – Ran for 1,400 yards and averaged nine yards a carry for the Spartans.
Pat Kelly, OL, Hand – Cornerstone of a Tiger offensive line that protected All-State quarterback Ryan Fodor and opened holes for a talented backfield.
Steve Orts, DL, Hand – Relentless pass-rusher was a big part of the Tigers’ back-to-back state titles.
Rossi Patterson, LB, Notre Dame – Had 61 tackles, six interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns for the Green Knights.
Kyle Mushaweh, DB, Cheshire – Had 54 tackles, two interceptions and fumble recoveries for the Rams’ defensive unit.
