Congratulations to the 2020-21 Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Leaders.
Two recipients, as selected by their principal, from each SCC member school are recognized for their leadership and excellence, in the classroom, in their schools and local communities.
Two student athletes – Skylar Burzynski (Amity Regional) and Lucas O’Reardon (Lyman Hall HS) – are the recipients of the 2021 SCC “Comeback Player of the Year” awards. Both students suffered severe injuries, yet were able to overcome them to become outstanding role models in their respective schools.
A corporate sponsor of the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC), Connecticut Orthopaedics has offered a Comeback Player of the Year Scholarship for student-athletes who participated in an interscholastic sport during the 2020-2021 academic year and showed great leadership both on and off the field after their severe injury.
Coaches and school’s athletic directors nominated these student-athletes after they each suffered an unfortunate injury that prohibited them from playing for their high school teams. Both will receive a financial scholarship to be used for their college education.
"This is our 11th year awarding student-athletes from the SCC with scholarships,” said Glenn Elia, CEO of Connecticut Orthopaedics. “Our goal is to acknowledge student-athletes who have overcome the challenges of an injury and, through hard work and determination, become positive role models for their fellow teammates. As sports medicine specialists, we understand intimately what it takes to recover from an injury and return to playing sports at a high level."

The SCC Scholar Athlete recognition program recognizes the “best of the best” in the SCC. Recipients are selected by their school’s coaches and athletic directors. Recipients must have a minimum of a B (3.0) average overall and be a varsity letterwinner. Recipients should also demonstrate leadership qualities by: being a positive role model for other students both on and off the field; exhibiting an ability to help a teammate overcome adversity; showing a commitment to self-improvement; and putting the needs of the team before themselves.

Congratulations to the SCC member schools' recipients of the CIAC Scholar-Athlete awards.
The 38th annual CIAC Scholar-Athlete Awards will take place Sunday May 2. For the second straight year the event will be a virtual celebration broadcast on Fox61 at 6:30pm. The half hour television special will celebrate and feature photos of all 363 CIAC statewide scholar-athletes. Long time emcee, and 4-time Connecticut Sportscaster of the Year Bob Picozzi hosted.
The Scholar-Athlete Program annually recognizes two high school seniors from each member high school whose academic and athletic careers have been exemplary, whose personal standards and achievements are a model to others, and who possess high levels of integrity, self-discipline and courage. It is one of the longest running CAS-CIAC events, honoring standout senior student athletes every year since 1984, but could not be held in person this year and last due to COVID-19 concerns.
