SCC Athletes of the Month for OCTOBER 2021, presented by j.roo’s of North Haven
The October SCC Female Athlete of the Month is Lauralton Hall senior swimmer Claire Kehley.
A key member of Lauralton Hall’s swimming squad, Claire swam in 12 individual event races during six dual meets in the month of October, including the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 Individual Medley and the 100 freestyle. She won 11 out of 12 individual events for the Crusaders. In fact, the one event she didn’t win, she came in second by a tenth of a second!
An outstanding student, Claire is in Advanced Placement and Honors classes, and a member of the National and Spanish honor societies.
The October SCC Male Athlete of the Month is Sheehan senior running back/outside linebacker Jacob Shook.
A captain, Jacob led the Titans to a 4-1 record in the month of October, totaling 793 yards rushing (158.6 yards per game) and scored nine touchdowns and five two-point conversions. He added 10 receptions for 122 yards. On defense, he posted 13 tackles, two quarterback sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery. His best game came on October 29 when he rushed for 304 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Hillhouse.

SCC Scholar Athletes – Fall 2021, presented by Great Blue Research
The SCC Scholar Athlete recognition program recognizes the “best of the best” in the SCC. Recipients are selected by their school’s coaches and athletic directors. Recipients must have a minimum of a B (3.0) average overall and be a varsity letterwinner. Recipients should also demonstrate leadership qualities by: being a positive role model for other students both on and off the field; exhibiting an ability to help a teammate overcome adversity; showing a commitment to self-improvement; and putting the needs of the team before themselves.

The Southern Connecticut Conference had a successful afternoon at the CIAC State Open races at Wickham Park.
Fourteen SCC male student-athletes were among the top 50 finishers in the 179-runner race.
Four SCC runners were in the top 25 to earn All-State honors and a berth to next week’s New England Championships in Thetford, Vermont. Xavier senior Eamon Burke, who was the 2021 SCC champion, finished sixth (15:55), followed by Wilbur Cross senior Nikita Omelchenko (8th, 16:05), Amity Regional senior Mason Beaudette (12th, 16:16) and Daniel Hand senior John O’Keefe was 22nd (16:25).
Xavier senior Brody Santagata was 28th (16:16), followed closely by Amity senior Parker Paragas (30th, 16:38). Two Daniel Hand juniors, Harrison Grenier and Nicholas Montana, were 34th (16:49) and 39th (16:53), respectively. Xavier senior Joshua Lesniak was 36th (16:51) and Alex Ushchak, a junior, was 39th (16:55). Cheshire sophomore Tyler Caron was 43rd (17:01). Shelton senior William Rodrigues was 45th (17:05) followed by Xavier senior Sam Simko (46th, 17:06) and Guilford junior Michael Masotti (48th, 17:06).
As a team, SCC champion Xavier finished second to champion Ridgefield. The Falcons earn a berth to next week’s New England Championships along with SCC runner-up Daniel Hand, which finished sixth. Guilford finished ninth.
In the girls race, four runners were among the top 30 finishers led by 2021 SCC champion Alexa Ciccone, a sophomore from Cheshire, who finished fifth (18:55).
Guilford senior Julia Antony was 10th (19:17), followed by Wilbur Cross sophomore Anna Omelchenko (17th, 19:32). Sacred Heart Academy junior Kristina Ponzio was 26th (19:41).
Other top finishers in the 181-runner race included Lauralton Hall junior Kelly Jones (36th, 20:03) and Amity Regional junior Nell Grant (37th, 20:05). Guilford senior Olivia Skapczynski finished 53rd (20:28).
SCC champion Guilford finished sixth in the final team rankings and earned a berth to next week’s New England championships.
